- Humans today create a lot of garbage. In times past, there was less. People owned fewer things and used things longer. In the United States trash goes to the junkyard or a landfill, while in the past trash was decomposed. Currently in the United States there are more recyclable products.
- Some areas of the planet face some extreme waste disposal, like Antarctica surprising right? Antarctica has about 70 waste sites that contain chemicals and heavy metals.
- Today, trash has staying power that will be intact when we no longer are. Charged chemical compounds that trap pollutants have shown some success and may have some applications in similar habitats, such as northern Russia and Alaska.
- Landfills receive about 55 percent of all garbage in the United States. Researchers are investigating ways to turn trash to fuel, such as extracting cellulosic ethanol from paper refuse. Trash increases every minute because an area of a tropical forest as large as 50 football fields is destroyed every minute.
