Grand Canyon - Anita

  • Though widely considered as one of the world's most spectacular canyons, the Grand Canyon is neither the world's longest or deepest gorge.
  • While the Colorado River flows through the Grand Canyon, it cuts through a schist, a type of metamorphic rock that is 1.75 billion years old. That's nearly half the age of Earth [ which is 4.5 billion years old.]
  • Of the 6 rattlesnake species spotted in the park boundaries, one has an unusual pink hue that matches the color of the local rocks.
  • When Native Americans first lived in the United States, the Paiute Tribe named the Grand Canyon Kaibab, which means "mountain lying down" or "mountain turned upside down."
  • Scientists still don't agree on how the Grand Canyon formed.
