- From it's source in a melting mountain glacier, a river flows swiftly downhill cutting a narrow valley.
- Smaller streams, called tributaries flow in from springs and lakes.
- Farther down stream the terrain flattens out and the and river flows more slowly.
- Shedding the heavy load of sand,silt, and clay it has been moving along, the river expanse of flat fertile land called delta.
- The river widens and and forms a floodplain.
