- No
one is sure exactly who invented the
sport of golf or when that happened; but most people seem to agree that
the sport as we know it originated in 15th century Scotland. Since then,
golf has been refined into a fascinating sport with intricate rules,
specialized language, and impressive statistics.
- The
youngest and oldest golfers ever to win the Masters Tournament are the
same person! In 1963 and at age 23, Jack Nicklaus became
the youngest golfer to win the Masters. He became the tournament’s oldest
winner when he won it for the sixth time in 1986 at age 46.
- Golf is, by definition, “playing a ball with a
club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive
strokes in accordance with the Rules.
- Golf competition is generally played for the
lowest number of strokes by an individual, known simply as stroke play.
- In 2005, Golf Digest calculated that the countries with most golf courses per capita, starting with the best endowed were: Scotland, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Canada, Wales, United States, Sweden, and England (countries with fewer than 500,000 people were excluded)
