Microsoft - Anita

  • Paul Allen and Bill Gates, childhood friends with a passion in computer programming, were seeking to make a successful business utilizing their shared skills. In 1972 they founded their first company named Traf-O-Data, which offered a rudimentary computer that tracked and analyzed automobile traffic data. Allen went on to pursue a degree in computer science at the University of Washington, later dropping out of school to work at Honeywell. Gates began studies at Harvard.
  • Microsoft has been a dominant force in the consumer electronics and software business for decades, and now its name is almost synonymous with the PC. But where did this now famous name come from? Microsoft was created and named by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. It is a combination of the words "microcomputer" and "software," and the name was originally spelled as "Micro-soft." Another interesting fact is that the Windows operating system was originally known as "Interface Manager" before the marketing department got a hold of it.
  • One awesome tradition that "Softies" (Microsoft employees) keep is the M&M anniversary celebration. On the anniversary of their employment, each employee is expected to bring in one pound of M&M candies for each year they have worked at Microsoft.Microsoft employs nearly 100,000 employees worldwide, with over 50,000 working in the United States. That's a lot of M&Ms!
  • Aside from working at one of the biggest companies in the world, there's a big perk for Microsoft employees -- free drinks! Softies that work on the corporate campus can down all the free beverages that they want. The top choices are milk and orange juice, and more than 23 million drinks are on the house each year. There is also free candy on the campus shuttles!
  • Microsoft headquarters is located in Redmond, Washington, and the sprawling campus takes up a large part of the city. At some point in the 1990s, someone apparently abandoned a large litter of pet rabbits near the Microsoft campus. It wasn't long before the rabbits started multiplying and becoming a big problem for the city. The population has since been reduced, but there are still plenty of rabbits hopping around the Microsoft lawn!
