Peacocks - Anita

  • A Peacock is a male peafowl and a Peahen is a female peafowl. Peacocks have a crested head and a very large fan like-tail marked with brilliant plumage adorned with iridescent eyes or spots. Peacocks are known for their brilliant plumage which only the males have. 
  • There are 3 different species of peacocks : Indian, Green and Congo. Peahens choose their mates according to the size, color and quality of their tails. Peacocks are omnivores, eating plants, flowers, insects and reptiles.
  • Peacocks are highly sociable and need companionship. Peacocks generally have harmen of 2 to 5 females. The Peahen is very dowdy compared to the Peacock and has mottled brown feathers.
  • The crests of Peacocks differ from according to the species :
  1. Indian and Green Peacocks have bare patches around their eyes and a crest made of feathers arranged in a fan shape.
  2. The Indian Peacocks crest looks like dots at the ends of sticks.
  3. The Congo Peacock has a vertical white elongated hair-like feathers on its crown.
